Hiring and Training Process
- Applicants selected for hire will begin as Substitute Cooks.
- Substitute Cooks must successfully complete a mandatory 28-hour (5 consecutive day) training program.
- After successful completion of training, individuals may:
- Continue working as a Substitute Cook;
- Be considered for a regular cook position based on job performance, qualifications, and district vacancies.
- Placement in a regular position is not guaranteed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare and portion food according to standardized recipes and district guidelines.
- Serve meals to students in a courteous and efficient manner.
- Maintain sanitation standards in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Operate basic kitchen equipment safely.
- Follow all food safety and HACCP procedures.
- Work collaboratively with kitchen staff and school personnel.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to communicate effectively in English sufficient to understand food safety procedures, follow written recipes and instructions, and interact appropriately with students and staff.
- Ability to perform basic math functions, including counting, measuring, and portioning food accurately.
- Basic understanding of food safety principles.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Must successfully complete a 28-hour training program.
- Must obtain a valid Food Handler’s Permit prior to beginning independent work.
- Must successfully complete and pass a criminal background check and fingerprinting in accordance with District policy.
Essential Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to stand and walk for up to 4 consecutive hours during scheduled shifts.
- Ability to perform repetitive motions such as bending, reaching, and lifting.
