Qualifications

  • Meet all requirements of the Ohio Department of Education and District Board of Education Policy
  • Be of legal age with a minimum of two years driving experience
  • Possess either a high school diploma or GED
  • Physically qualified (rule 3301-83-07 of the Administrative Code)
  • Completion of semi-annual driver record checks through the Ohio Department of Education (records maintained by the employer for a minimum of six years)
  • Disqualifying conditions for operating a school bus:
    • More than six points on driving record in the last two years
    • A conviction of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or a controlled substance during the last six years
    • Two or more serious traffic violations (as defined in divisions (D)(1) to (D)(7) of section 4506.1 of the Revised Code) during the past two years
    • Any railroad crossing violation during the past year
  • Hold school bus driver certification from the Ohio Department of Education (O.D.E.) and Logan-Hocking School District
  • Complete pre-service and in-service training (rule 3301-83-10 of Administrative Code)
  • Physical capability to safely lift and manage preschool and special needs children when necessary
  • Participate in drug and alcohol testing as mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) pursuant to 49 C.F.R. 382 (January 2007); refusal disqualifies from operating a school bus
  • Must maintain eligibility for school district fleet insurance coverage
  • Good attendance record

Responsibilities

  • Drive buses punctually on regularly scheduled routes
  • Drive on approved non-routine/extracurricular trips as required
  • Maintain a clean bus
  • Inspect bus as required by Ohio Pupil Transportation Operation and Safety Rules and document on a provided form
  • Report bus defects to mechanics using the work order form
  • Obey all traffic laws
  • Develop and enforce a student-seating chart
  • Maintain and report all discipline incidents appropriately
  • Load and discharge students only at authorized stops
  • Assist as needed with handicapped students
  • Promote positive public relations
  • Operate buses only for approved school functions
  • Report all accidents and complete all required reports
  • Request vehicle service at least two days in advance of scheduled maintenance
  • Transport only authorized students to and from Board-approved bus stops and routes
  • Fuel vehicle as required by operational regulations
  • Maintain over a half tank of fuel when parking vehicle after route
  • Check bus condition and seats following each route
  • Perform any other duties required to expedite the transportation program
  • Other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor
