Substitute Bus Driver (2026-27)

Training & Pay

  • We provide CDL training (approximately six weeks).
  • Training pay: $17.13 minimum wage during "classroom time".
  • 2026-27 Sub Rate: $28.75 (includes driver training up to and as a CDL holder, and route training).

Qualifications

  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license with Class B or higher Commercial Driver Endorsement (CDL) with passenger and air brake endorsement.
  • Good physical condition.
  • Ability to exit from the driver's seat and reach the outside emergency door in 20 seconds or less.
  • Ability to relate to students, staff, and parents.
  • Ability to perform duties with students on the bus.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Valid first aid and CPR certification.
  • Must achieve minimum acceptable levels/scores in reading and/or math assessments.
  • Must pass a DOT physical and drug screening requirements.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least five years of experience as a licensed driver of a passenger vehicle.
  • Must successfully complete a Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation background and criminal history check pursuant to RCW 43.43.830/832.
  • Must meet all requirements for holding a school bus driver authorization, including a review of a five-year abstract of your driving record.
  • Must successfully complete a school bus driver training program facilitated by an authorized school bus driver instructor.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip functions of school vehicle as outlined in Orting School District Driver's Handbook:
    • Check fuel level and fill when fuel is under half tank.
    • Check oil level, water level, wiper washer water level, wipers, tires.
    • Inspect outside of vehicle for any new damage, inside for any cut seats or vandalism.
    • Check all lights.
    • Check all emergency exits from both inside and out, mirrors for proper adjustment.
    • Maintain clean windows, inside and out.
    • Check fire extinguisher, first aid kit, body fluid clean-up kit, and emergency triangles to ensure everything is present and working properly.
  • At the end of each route, inspect bus interior, pick up anything left, look for sleeping children, and clean the bus as required.
  • Attend to students' special needs as outlined in Orting School District Driver's Handbook.
  • Handle student discipline as outlined in Orting School District Driver's Handbook.
  • Maintain current "route maps".
  • Comply with standards and expectations as outlined in Orting School District Driver's Handbook.
  • Perform other duties as required by supervisor.

Benefits

For on-call positions, eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours worked during the last two (2) school years (September 1 through August 31). Some on-call positions may not be benefit eligible.

Regular employees who are not in on-call positions and are anticipated to work 630 hours or more in a year are eligible for the following benefits:
