Substitute Bus Driver

About the Role

Operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students. Provide safe and efficient transportation for District students to and from school, special events, and field trips. Supervise drivers and monitors on their daily duties and responsibilities, maintain necessary documentation, and assist with training and evaluations.

Responsibilities

• Drive a school bus over designated routes in accordance with specified time schedules and regulations.
• Pick up and discharge students at established bus stops under varying weather conditions; report safety incidents.
• Maintain bus in safe operating condition through daily inspections, including checking fuel, oil, water, brakes, lights, and doors; report mechanical defects.
• Maintain order and discipline among students on the bus following District policies; interact with parents and school officials regarding concerns.
• Perform emergency bus evacuation drills as required by Kentucky Administration Regulations.
• Transport physically and mentally handicapped children, including assisting with loading, unloading, and securing wheelchairs.
• Fuel and clean buses, including sweeping, mopping, wiping upholstery, and removing debris.
• Maintain records for vehicle maintenance, miles driven, student transportation, and incident reports.
• Attend safety and preventive emergency meetings; utilize two-way radio for communication.
• Perform first aid according to established guidelines and procedures.
• Supervise drivers and monitors, including maintaining documentation for licenses, training, audits, and drug testing.
• Provide training to drivers to fulfill annual requirements and assist with evaluations.

Requirements

• High school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate, or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law.
• One year of experience operating a motor vehicle.
• Valid Kentucky Commercial Class B driver's license with passenger endorsement and School Bus Certificate.
• Must pass a driving record check.

Skills

• Safe driving practices and knowledge of State Motor Vehicle code and Kentucky Administration Regulations for pupil transportation.

• Ability to maintain order and discipline among students while driving.
• Ability to recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action.
• Ability to learn designated bus routes, including stops and traffic hazards.
• Ability to maintain routine records and meet schedules.

• Ability to follow oral and written directions and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Legal and defensive driving practices.
