Substitute Bus Attendant

About the role

Assist the school bus driver in ensuring safe and orderly transport of students, including those with special needs, across varying ages and cognitive levels.

Responsibilities

• Relate to children of differing ages or cognitive levels and students with special needs.
• Communicate school bus ridership rules and maintain orderly behavior while on the bus.
• Assist the driver in safely loading and unloading students; train students in proper crossing techniques.
• Physically assist children on and off the bus as necessary.
• Secure all students who require specialized securement in a 5-point harness, safety vest, or appropriate mobility device during transport.
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
• Communicate with classroom aides, teachers, principals, and parents concerning student behavior as appropriate.
• Maintain current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures.
• Assist the driver in thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections, checking the bus for items left behind and sleeping students.
