Substitute Bus Attendant
This is a substitute position. Under current New York State Law, candidates will be required to undergo fingerprinting and a criminal history background check prior to appointment.
About the Role
This is responsible work involving maintaining order and ensuring the safety of children who ride the assigned school bus route. The attendant escorts students across the street for boarding or disembarking, supervises behavior en route, and may assist physically or mentally handicapped students. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the School Bus Driver.
Responsibilities
- Accompanies bus driver and students on scheduled route.
- Boards and disembarks the bus at each stop to escort students across the street.
- Supervises the boarding and unloading of student passengers at stops, transfer points, and school sites.
- Assists and lifts physically handicapped and mentally retarded students to and from the bus.
- Maintains order on the bus and enforces district policy governing student behavior while the bus is in operation.
- Assists the driver when backing up the bus.
- Reports instances of continuing disruptive student behavior orally and in writing.
- Requests driver to summon emergency aid via two-way radio or operates the radio.
- Reports trouble at bus stops to the driver, terminal, bus garage, or transportation office.
- Assists students with special needs.
- Attends scheduled job training classes, workshops, and parent/school/driver meetings.
- Ensures students are seated before the bus is in motion.
Requirements
- Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work well with drivers, students, school personnel, and the Transportation Department.
- Ability to understand students in their care and be helpful to them and fellow workers.
- Good judgment, dependability, and common sense in exercising control.
- Patience, conscientiousness, and physical capability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Qualifications
There are no education or experience requirements. Candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Attendant as set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education.
