Substitute Bar Server
Mandarin Oriental New York is looking for a Substitute Bar Server to join our Food and Beverage team in our exciting new outlet The Bar. A stunning fusion of modern design with stylish oriental flair, Mandarin Oriental, New York features 244 elegant guestrooms and suites — all with breathtaking views of Manhattan and Five-Star hospitality. Luxurious amenities include MO Lounge, all-day dining overlooking Central Park and the Manhattan skyline; a 14,500 square-foot Five-Star Mandarin Oriental Spa; and a state-of-the-art fitness center with a 75-foot lap pool.
About the role
Based at the Mandarin Oriental New York within the Food and Beverage Department, the Substitute Bar Server maintains a clean and tidy dining room environment, assists guests with menu questions, takes orders, and anticipates guests’ needs. The role reports to the Bar Manager/Food and Beverage Manager.
Responsibilities
- Support the company’s philosophy and culture through Pillars of Legendary Quality Experiences, Departmental Legendary Quality Experiences, and Guiding Principles (D.E.L.I.G.H.T) to ensure guest satisfaction.
- Retrieve supplies, wines, and beverages at the beginning of the shift from designated storage areas.
- Retrieve completed food and beverage orders from the kitchen or bar, confirm accuracy, and deliver to guests with appropriate condiments while adhering to all liquor regulations.
- Check assigned station (rotating weekly) before, during, and after shifts for proper setup and cleanliness.
- Work collaboratively with other Bar servers and bartenders to ensure a legendary quality experience for all guests.
- Greet guests in a friendly and courteous manner, explain special cocktails, and record order details accurately, including allergy and dietary restrictions.
- Replenish beverages as needed, check guest satisfaction, and present the check in a timely manner.
- Maintain a clean and organized service area, including wiping tables, vacuuming, and ensuring silverware and glassware are spotless.
- Set up snack stations, table lights, and mark tables appropriately for each course.
- Enter and close out all sales in the POS system without errors, ensuring all items are accounted for on the final bill.
- Set up tables according to Bar Manager/F&B Manager instructions and clear tables between courses.
- Verify guest satisfaction during each course and anticipate guest needs proactively.
- Wish guests a warm farewell and thank them for visiting.
- Deliver all checks and reports at the end of the shift, ensuring accurate billing and no open transactions.
- Perform opening and closing duties to set up for successful service.
- Follow all Forbes and LQE Standards of service at all times.
- Report suspicious activities or hazardous conditions to management and follow TIPS standards for alcoholic beverage service.
- Provide excellent service to all guests, assist with safety instructions in emergencies, and respond to guest questions.
- Demonstrate extensive knowledge of food, beverages, liquors, and cocktails to upsell products effectively.
- Set up side stations, complete side work daily, and assist MO Lounge cocktail servers or Food and Beverage coordinators as needed.
- Perform general cleaning tasks, attend training classes, pre-meal meetings, and monthly department meetings.
Requirements
- Reading, writing, and oral proficiency in English.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including holidays.
- Self-motivated with the ability to motivate others.
- In-depth knowledge of food preparation and wine.
- Excellent knowledge of mixed drinks and cocktails.
- Ability to relate to guests and management at all levels.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar position in a luxury setting.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Maintain clean and healthy personal hygiene and grooming.
- Ability to consistently delight and satisfy guests.
- Handle guest requests in a detailed manner.

Pay
$17.95 to $23.93 hourly, commensurate with experience and IWA guidelines. A competitive benefits package is offered through the Employee Benefits Fund.
