About the Role

A Substation Welder at Irby Construction Company must possess a minimum of two (2) years of experience in welding metal, with aluminum experience as a plus. This includes vocational training and hands-on welding in a job-type role. The individual will have in-depth knowledge of all applicable OSHA codes and standards, especially for welding.

Responsibilities

• Accurately take field measurements for string busswork and tube buss, then cut and weld connectors to busswork.
• Weld aluminum connectors to aluminum busswork ranging from 1” to 6” in size.
• Weld aluminum connectors to aluminum cable up to 2000 AAC.
• Obtain or maintain an Aluminum Welders Certification.
• Operate equipment commonly used for substation aluminum welding, including:
  • 12k lb. lulls with forks
  • Man lifts (45’ articulating to 120’ boom)
  • Horizontal band saws
  • MIG welders
• Ensure quality of work is performed according to specifications.
• Adhere to all Company Safety and Health Policies.
• Assist with other activities when not actively welding.
• Work in storm restoration operations to rebuild and/or repair damaged power systems.
• Attend training classes or seminars for new processes, safety regulations, or refresher training.

Requirements

• Valid driver’s license.
• Willingness to travel and stay out of town as required by the project.
• Ability to work typical shifts of 4-10 hours or 5-10 hours, including overtime and extended periods as needed.
• Capability to work in various outdoor conditions, including inclement weather (heat, cold, rain, snow).
• Ability to walk and work across uneven terrain.
• Climb on and off large trucks and equipment.
• Work outside 100% of the time.
• Lift in excess of 50 pounds daily.
• Work off the ground in man baskets at heights ranging from 20’ to 120’.
• Work around energized systems.
• Current applicable aluminum welding certification or ability to pass a weld test.

Qualifications

• Minimum of two (2) years of welding experience, with aluminum experience preferred.
• Knowledge of electrical, below-grade, or concrete foundation trades is a plus.
• High Voltage Substation construction knowledge or experience is a plus.
