Substation Training Instructor, System Operator

Join the clean energy revolution and build a better tomorrow. In this role, you’ll prepare the next generation of system operators by delivering engaging onboarding and incumbent refresher training. Leverage advanced simulators to create realistic, scenario-based learning experiences that strengthen operational decision-making and system reliability. Partner with EL&D and business line subject matter experts to develop, enhance, and maintain high-impact curriculum aligned with evolving grid modernization. Manage class schedules and training delivery while shaping the future of training excellence.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate training such as new hire, new to role, refresher, just-in-time performance-based training, continuous education, and/or performance support for students within T&D (electrical construction, maintenance, and operations) in classroom or field training environments.
• Participate as a subject matter expert to develop and maintain training curriculum, materials, performance support tools, and assessments using the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT), focusing on safety protocols, work processes, new technologies, and procedures.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders and subject matter experts to identify training needs, gaps, and opportunities for improvement in T&D training delivery (e.g., safety and compliance, new technology and equipment, and grid operations).
• Serve as a subject matter expert to provide guidance and support to trainees on safety protocols, work processes, new technologies, and procedures related to transmission, distribution, and substation operations.
• Administer and proctor classroom training tests and field assessments, determining pass/fail criteria and partnering with stakeholders to provide feedback to students in T&D technical skills programs (e.g., lineman apprenticeship, substation operations).
• Partner with front-line employees and stakeholders to resolve training issues and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including annual safety and compliance training.
• Participate in the development and execution of the technical training roadmap, strategic planning, and operational excellence initiatives, incorporating the latest industry trends and best practices.
• Organize and oversee hands-on demonstrations and lab exercises to reinforce learning objectives and provide practical experience with electrical equipment and tools.
• Support training delivery logistics and resources across multiple training locations, programs, and systems on topics such as distribution construction and maintenance and electrical systems.
• Partner with and support front-line leaders with employee performance management activities. Serve as a mentor to help students navigate their education and career paths in their technical field.
• Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in T&D to incorporate relevant updates into training programs.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations, industry standards, approved work methods, and company policies in all training activities, maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment for all participants.
• A material job duty is ensuring the protection of all physical, financial, and cybersecurity assets, and properly accessing and managing private customer data, proprietary information, confidential medical records, and other highly sensitive information with the highest standards of conduct and integrity.

Requirements

• Five or more years of experience in electric utility line work, training, and/or instructional design.
• Possess a valid Class C Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years of on-shift System Operating experience.
• Work experience using Microsoft Office Applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.).
• Substation Training adjunct instructor experience or other on-the-job training experience.

Schedule

This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. The primary work location is Westminster, though the successful candidate may also be asked to work for an extended amount of time at Alhambra.
