Substation Technician B (NextEra)
About the role
This position serves as a Substation Technician - B, responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of substation equipment and systems. The role involves working with various pieces of construction equipment and performing tasks such as concrete foundations, buswork, control cable terminations, and transformer installations.
Responsibilities
- Perform new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting, and troubleshooting work of substation equipment/systems.
- Work safely while performing tasks involving concrete foundations, ground grids, and steel erection.
- Work with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect lives of self and others.
- Maintain Company vehicles, test equipment, and tools in good working condition.
- Coach subordinates on the crew.
Requirements
- Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
- Capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.
- Must possess a valid Commercial Drivers’ License.
- Supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
- Supply own safety toed work boots.
- Capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
- Capable of working in confined spaces/areas.
- Capable of working independently or with others.
- Operational experience of various types of heavy equipment.
- Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested.
- 90% travel required.
- Capable of following Company safety rules and policies.
- Knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
- Capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment.
- Capable of interpreting substation structural drawings (i.e. elevations, plan views, section views, grounding details, and foundation plans).
- Capable of accurately appraising technical situations.
- Capable of developing and interpreting a material list.
- Capable of tracing out phasing in a substation and verifying to the three line diagrams.
- Retained knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.
- Ability to establish grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable trough in new and existing stations.
- Grade and finish concrete slabs and foundations.
- Capable of performing routine carpentry work on building wood concrete forms to meet size and shape of concrete to be placed.
- Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.
Qualifications
- 4-6 years continuous working knowledge of 525 kv and below substation equipment, apparatus, and wiring.
- Operational experience of various types of heavy equipment: Bucket, derrick and boom trucks, Backhoes, excavators and skid steer loaders, Articulating Man-lifts, Pressure Diggers, Trenchers, Track Crawler Loader/Backhoe, Rough Terrain Telescopic Forklifts.
