About the role
A Substation Technician A is a non-exempt position in the construction, maintenance and repair of substation equipment / systems. This position requires work in confined spaces and in elevated work areas, and works with various pieces of construction equipment specific to the trade.
Responsibilities
- Works safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting and troubleshooting work of substation equipment/systems which includes, but is not limited to, work involving the following:
- Concrete Foundations, ground grids, and steel erection
- Buswork (High and Low Voltage)
- Airbreak / Hookstick Switches
- Control Cable Terminations (High / Low Voltage)
- Control Buildings
- Capacitor bank installations
- 23kv- 230 kv Transformers, regulators and circuit breakers
- Circuit Switchers, motor-operated and manual switches
- Maintain Company vehicles, test equipment and tools in good working conditions
- Frequently works with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
Requirements
- Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
- Must be capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.
- Must possess a Commercial Drivers’ License.
- Supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
- Supply own safety toed work boots.
- Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
- Able to work in confined spaces/areas.
- Able to work independently or with others.
- Operational experience of various types of heavy equipment.
- Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested.
- 90% Travel Required.
- Capable of following Company safety rules and policies.
- Extensive knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
- Capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment.
- Ability to accurately appraise technical situations and recommend resolutions to problems.
- Ability to lead/coach subordinates on the crew.
- Ability to develop and interpret a material list.
- Ability to trace out phasing in a substation and verify to the three line diagrams.
- Proficient knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.
- Ability to determine the proper phase shift and rotation in paralleling transformer banks.
- Capable of running the job during the absence of the Foreman.
- Able to establish grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable trough in new and existing stations.
- Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when requested.
- Willing to work over-time when requested. Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.

- Physical Demands: Regularly talk or hear; frequently stand, walk, use hands to fingers, handle to feel, and reach with hands and arms; occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites; noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud; exposure to various weather conditions.
