About the role

A Substation Technician A is a non-exempt position in the construction, maintenance and repair of substation equipment / systems. This position requires work in confined spaces and in elevated work areas, and works with various pieces of construction equipment specific to the trade.

Responsibilities

  • Works safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting and troubleshooting work of substation equipment/systems which includes, but is not limited to, work involving the following:
  • Concrete Foundations, ground grids, and steel erection
  • Buswork (High and Low Voltage)
  • Airbreak / Hookstick Switches
  • Control Cable Terminations (High / Low Voltage)
  • Control Buildings
  • Capacitor bank installations
  • 23kv- 230 kv Transformers, regulators and circuit breakers
  • Circuit Switchers, motor-operated and manual switches
  • Maintain Company vehicles, test equipment and tools in good working conditions
  • Frequently works with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.

Requirements

  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Must be capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.
  • Must possess a Commercial Drivers’ License.
  • Supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
  • Supply own safety toed work boots.
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Able to work in confined spaces/areas.
  • Able to work independently or with others.
  • Operational experience of various types of heavy equipment.
  • Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested.
  • 90% Travel Required.
  • Capable of following Company safety rules and policies.
  • Extensive knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
  • Capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment.
  • Ability to accurately appraise technical situations and recommend resolutions to problems.
  • Ability to lead/coach subordinates on the crew.
  • Ability to develop and interpret a material list.
  • Ability to trace out phasing in a substation and verify to the three line diagrams.
  • Proficient knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.
  • Ability to determine the proper phase shift and rotation in paralleling transformer banks.
  • Capable of running the job during the absence of the Foreman.
  • Able to establish grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable trough in new and existing stations.
  • Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when requested.
  • Willing to work over-time when requested. Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.

  • Physical Demands: Regularly talk or hear; frequently stand, walk, use hands to fingers, handle to feel, and reach with hands and arms; occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites; noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud; exposure to various weather conditions.
