Substation Technician B (Next Era)
About the role
This position serves as a Substation Technician - B, responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of substation equipment and systems. The role involves working with various pieces of construction equipment specific to the trade, and may require work in confined spaces and elevated work areas.
Responsibilities
- Perform new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting, and troubleshooting work of substation equipment/systems, including buswork, airbreak/hookstick switches, control cable terminations, transformer/regulators/circuit breakers, circuit switchers, and more.
- Maintain Company vehicles, test equipment, and tools in good working condition.
- Work safely while handling energized high voltage systems, requiring skill and care to protect lives.
- Coach subordinates on the crew.
Requirements
- Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
- Capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.
- Must supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
- Must supply own safety toed work boots.
- Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
- Capable of working in confined spaces/areas.
- Capable of working independently or with others.
- Operational experience of various types of heavy equipment.
- Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested.
- 90% travel required.
- Capable of following Company safety rules and policies.
- Knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
- Capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment.
- Capable of interpreting substation structural drawings (i.e. elevations, plan views, section views, grounding details, and foundation plans).
- Willing to work over-time when requested. Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.
Qualifications
- Able to establish grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable trough in new and existing stations.
- Grade and finish concrete slabs and foundations.
- Perform routine carpentry work on building wood concrete forms to meet size and shape of concrete to be placed.
- Retained knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.
