Substation Technician A

Substation Technician-A is a non-exempt position focused on the construction, maintenance, and repair of substation equipment and systems. This role requires 6-8 years of continuous working knowledge of 525 kV and below substation equipment, apparatus, and wiring. The position involves work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and with various construction equipment specific to the trade. Technicians may work independently or with others, occasionally putting in long hours during emergency conditions, and should be able to lead or coach subordinates on the crew. Work locations vary, and travel to other states, including Florida, is required based on customer demands.

Responsibilities

• Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance, repair, testing, adjusting, and troubleshooting of substation equipment/systems, including but not limited to:
  • Concrete foundations, ground grids, and steel erection
  • Buswork (high and low voltage)
  • Airbreak/hookstick switches
  • Control cable and terminations (high/low voltage)
  • Control buildings, conduit, and duck banks
  • Capacitor bank installations (23 kV–230 kV)
  • Transformers, regulators, and circuit breakers
  • Circuit switchers, motor-operated, and manual switches
• Maintain company vehicles, test equipment, and tools in good working condition.
• Frequently work with energized high-voltage systems, requiring skill and care to protect lives.
• Operate various types of heavy equipment, including:
  • Bucket, derrick, and boom trucks
  • Backhoes, excavators, and skid steer loaders
  • Articulating man-lifts
  • Pressure diggers and trenchers
  • Track crawler loader/backhoe
  • Rough terrain telescopic forklifts
• Interpret substation structural drawings (e.g., elevations, plan views, section views, grounding details, foundation plans) and communicate with customers and subordinates.
• Accurately appraise technical situations and recommend resolutions to problems.
• Lead and coach subordinates on the crew.
• Develop and interpret material lists.
• Trace out phasing in a substation and verify against three-line diagrams.
• Determine proper phase shift and rotation in paralleling transformer banks.
• Run the job during the absence of the Foreman.
• Establish grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable troughs in new and existing stations.
• Follow company safety rules and policies.
• Work overtime, weekends, holidays, and outside normal work schedules as required, especially during emergencies.

Requirements

• 6-8 years of continuous working knowledge of 525 kV and below substation equipment.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• Supply own personal hand tools and safety-toed work boots as required by the company.
• Capable of rigorous physical labor, including:
  • Climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.
  • Lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Working in confined spaces.
• Extensive knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes, and standards.
• Ability to work in close proximity to energized substation equipment.
• Proficient knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.
• 90% travel required, including travel to Florida and other states/locations.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to talk or hear.
• Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
• Exposed to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration.
• Occasionally exposed to extreme conditions at construction job sites.
• Work environment and job sites can be loud.
• Work performed in outside weather conditions.
