About the role

The Substation Superintendent is primarily responsible for project performance including safety, quality, schedule, budget, and client satisfaction during the construction of the substation. This position reports directly to the Substation Construction Manager.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Manages and coordinates all substation construction activities for compliance with the CPM schedule and monitors and enforces compliance with contract requirements;
  • Makes sure the construction is productive and follows the schedule, reporting to the Substation Construction Manager, Project Manager, Director of Construction, and Project Controls Manager;
  • Takes steps to meet the project's budget and schedule;
  • Directs and approves the creation and implementation of construction schedule recovery plans if needed;
  • Coordinates the Construction Completion Walkdowns and the transfer of start-up packages to the Startup Manager, supervising the resolution of all punch list items;
  • Aids the Project Manager in client interactions and relationships;
  • Collaborates with the Material Manager to verify all secured materials for acceptance;
  • Reports weekly schedule and commodity installation status to the Construction Manager and the Project Manager;
  • Monitors all extra work authorization requests, back charges, and supplier/subcontractor progress/final payment requests for acceptance and ensures timely tracking information is provided to Project Controls to support the change management system;
  • Complies with Safety, Quality, Ethical Standards, Lessons Learned, and Performance Management programs in accordance with Division Policies, Standards, Guides, and Contractual commitments;
  • Makes sure all CIR replies to the subcontractors are approved;
  • Ensures the completion of the construction punchlist relevant to the substation;
  • Acts as the Safety Representative on site in the absence of the regular Safety Supervisor;
  • Has a broad understanding of all construction disciplines and can step in for any lead discipline;
  • Resolves safety and quality issues with the safety and quality managers; further disputes are deferred to the Project Manager or Division Safety manager;
  • Understands the major commercial and deliverable terms of the construction subcontracts and manages within these terms;
  • Writes the substation construction portion of the client and construction monthly report;
  • Coordinates with the Field Engineers or home office engineers on engineering deliverables;

Education And/or Work Experience Requirements

  • Advanced level of knowledge in: Safety and OSHA requirements, project permits and permit requirements, interpreting state rules and regulations; Contract management, management of sub-contractors, vendors, and materials; Construction drawing review, drawing quantity takeoff, reporting, writing skills; Relationship building, leadership, team building, mentor and facilitator, interpersonal skills; Interpretation of a project schedule, planning, interpretation of scopes of work, decision-making; Adaptability to environment, working in a fast-paced environment;
  • Intermediate level of knowledge in: Project management, budget analysis and controls, change orders, QA/QC processes, Developing logical and resource-loaded project schedules, estimating work efforts, development of processes and procedures; Continuous improvement, such as Lean, Six Sigma, Total Quality Management; Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio), job costing or accounting software;
  • Basic level of knowledge in: Scheduling software (MS Project, P6);

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience working in a construction environment;
  • 5+ years verifiable experience as a Substation Superintendent;
  • OSHA 30;

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • This position is a field posting and requires 75-100% travel;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record;
  • Will perform sedentary office duties;
  • May occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and required to sit, stand, and walk regularly;
