About the role
We are seeking an experienced Substation Superintendent / Construction Manager to lead the field execution of high-voltage greenfield substation projects ranging from 161kV through 345kV. This individual will be responsible for overseeing all on-site construction activities, ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with utility specifications, NESC requirements, and company quality standards. This position plays a critical role in ensuring project success through safety leadership, field execution excellence, workforce development, and client satisfaction.
Responsibilities
- Lead the field execution of high-voltage greenfield substation projects.
- Oversee all on-site construction activities to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with utility specifications, NESC requirements, and company quality standards.
- Manage large-scale utility, transmission, and substation construction projects.
- Lead self-perform craft labor, subcontractors, and field supervisors.
- Maintain strong relationships with utility clients, engineers, and project stakeholders.
- Provide safety leadership and ensure adherence to OSHA regulations and electrical safety standards.
- Interpret one-line diagrams, protection and control drawings, civil site drawings, structural drawings, and electrical installation documents.
- Manage multiple subcontractors and self-perform crews.
Essential Skills
- High voltage and substation construction expertise.
- Extensive experience in construction management.
- Subcontractor management skills.
- Strong knowledge of transmission and distribution systems, substation construction methodologies, and utility construction practices.
- Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings and documentation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associate's Degree, technical training, or construction management education preferred.
- 8+ years of electrical utility or substation construction experience.
- 5+ years in a supervisory role managing high-voltage substation construction projects.
- Proven experience leading greenfield substation projects in the 161kV–345kV range.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, project scheduling tools, and digital field documentation platforms.
