About the role

The Substation Civil / Structural Engineering Manager position at Orbital is a REMOTE WORK position requiring demonstrated leadership in engineering and design competency, particularly in electric substation projects up to 500 kV. The role involves providing technical support and direction to the Substation Design Team, managing projects, and supporting business development.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, and coordinates activities of team personnel to deliver projects on time and on budget while achieving project goals and objectives.
  • Directs and/or provides technical leadership to team for engineering design and construction functions within assigned projects.
  • Utilizes thorough understanding of industry standards, client standards, state or local municipal guidelines, and/or other applicable guidelines to manage team through engineering designs.
  • Manages team productivity and ensures projects are closed out and invoiced accordingly.
  • Serves as project lead or independent reviewer for projects assigned.
  • Provides technical support for clients and supports regional business development initiatives as a technical resource under the direction of the Director.
  • Lead and mentor teams of engineers and designers and assume responsibility for their success on projects.
  • Work in a project team environment with other engineers and designers involved in detailed electrical design and project management of utility substation projects.
  • Participate in project conceptualization, work planning, and project execution.
  • Lead in the execution of engineering activities.
  • Perform calculations for studies and reports and prepare equipment and installation specifications.
  • Coordinate design activities with other disciplines and groups.
  • Develop and improve processes, tools, and technology within the organization.
  • Provide leadership, training, and mentoring to other engineers and team members.
  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients or external partners.
  • Perform quality reviews for other engineers and designers.
  • Conduct field visits for site walkdowns, constructability reviews, construction support, and other site meetings as needed.
  • Support business development and marketing initiatives.
  • Work with Project Management team to develop project plans and provide project updates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university, or a related field with equivalent experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) license.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in financial analysis and departmental budget management experience, including financial reporting and department auditing.
  • Proficiency with relevant codes and standards.
  • Experience with structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and/or foundation design.
  • Working knowledge of STAAD or RISA analytical software or equivalent.
  • Experience in the Electric Utilities or Power Generation industries is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively organize multiple complex assignments and competing priorities to produce accurate products on time.
  • Ability to collaborate in cross-functional work teams.
