About the Role
Plan, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program for at-risk students in Grades 1-3 who need additional grade-level reading support. Guide and encourage students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare instructional materials, and deliver lesson plans that facilitate active learning.
- Differentiate methods to meet individual student requirements and align with school and system-wide curricular goals.
- Use diagnostic information from tests and assessments to develop and revise instructional objectives and tasks.
- Maintain accurate records to document student performance and align instructional plans with objectives, learning strategies, and student needs.
- Utilize relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.
- Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.
- Maintain discipline in accordance with school rules and manage student behavior by establishing and enforcing classroom procedures.
- Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
- Observe and evaluate student performance and development.
- Communicate student progress and needs regularly to students, colleagues, and parents.
- Direct assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and student workers to address individual student needs.
- Monitor students in various educational environments (classroom, cafeteria, playground, hallways, restrooms, field trips) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
- Guide the learning process toward achieving curriculum goals and establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects.
- Provide appropriate feedback on in-class and out-of-class work to encourage student growth.
- Carry out non-instructional duties as assigned and adhere to laws, policies, rules, and regulations.
- Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies, and school regulations.
- Participate in department, school, district, and parent meetings.
- Participate in extracurricular activities such as social events, sporting activities, clubs, and student organizations as directed.
- Engage in ongoing professional growth through reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, or advanced coursework.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Degree in education or a related area qualifying for licensure as a K-6 elementary teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
- Demonstrated preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic, and ability backgrounds.
- Ability to perform basic math, read technical information, compose documents, facilitate group discussions, and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
- Specific knowledge of appropriate codes, policies, regulations, age-appropriate activities, lesson plan requirements, child development stages, and behavioral management strategies.
- Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, including during inclusive activities.

- Applying assessment instruments and operating standard office equipment, including relevant software applications.
- Preparing and maintaining accurate records.
- Scheduling activities, meetings, and events; gathering, collating, and classifying data.

Physical Requirements
- Strength: Sedentary to medium—exerting force of 10-25 lbs. frequently and up to 10 lbs. constantly.
- Physical demands: Frequent sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities.
- Hearing and speech: Required for in-person and telephone communication.
- Vision: Frequent near acuity and occasional far acuity for reading printed materials, VDT screens, and monitoring devices.
- Mobility: Required to work in typical office settings and use standard office equipment.
- Environmental conditions: Varies from classrooms to outdoor weather conditions with temperatures ranging from mild to extreme. Exposure to moderate to loud noise levels for occasional to frequent periods.
- Hazards: Potential exposure to furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals, fumes, and power/hand-operated machinery.
