This position facilitates student success in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district-approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress, and providing a safe, optimal learning environment. The Dual Language Program allows students to develop high proficiency in both Spanish and English using a 50/50 model, enrolling both heritage Spanish speakers and English-first-language students. Students receive half-day instruction in Spanish and half in English, fostering cultural appreciation and language development.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred.
- Valid Virginia Department of Education license required, or eligibility to obtain one.
- Job-related experience within the specialized field with increasing levels of responsibility.
- Academic language proficiency in both English and Spanish.
- Knowledge of current standards, curriculum, and instructional practices in language arts and content areas.
- Commitment to the goals of dual language; previous experience in a dual-language program preferred.
- Knowledge of methods and strategies for teaching academic content to second language learners preferred.
- Commitment and ability to work with a full range of students, including gifted students, students with disabilities, English language learners, and students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
- A strong and positive attitude that all students can learn and have the capacity for academic excellence.
- Understand and apply knowledge about cultural norms, values, and beliefs in the context of teaching and learning.
- Ability to integrate technology into instruction.
- Remains current on research-based methods and strategies for working with culturally and linguistically diverse students.
Responsibilities
- Provides Spanish language instruction in social studies and academic content areas.
- Collaborates with English dual language partner teachers and other colleagues to plan and coordinate instruction.
- Plans differentiated classroom instruction addressing a range of language proficiency levels and individual learning needs.
- Adapts instructional materials for Spanish language learners.
- Administers developmental testing programs and subject-specific assessments to assess student competency levels and develop individual learning plans.
- Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress, achievements, and methods for improvement.
- Assesses student progress toward objectives and provides feedback to students, parents, and administration.
- Collaborates with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and achieve classroom objectives.
- Counsels students to improve performance, health status, problem-solving techniques, and personal issues.
- Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom assignments and provides an effective program addressing individual student requirements.
- Directs assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and student workers to address individual student needs.
- Instructs students to improve success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
- Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Monitors students in various educational environments (classroom, playground, field trips, etc.) to ensure safety and a positive learning environment.
- Participates in meetings to convey and gather information required to perform functions.
- Prepares written materials (grades, attendance, anecdotal records) to document student progress and meet mandated requirements.
- Reports incidents (fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain student safety and adhere to policies.
- Performs other related duties to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Required clearances: Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance and Tuberculosis Skin Test. Must follow safety and health protocols.
