About the Role

The teacher is the educational leader in the classroom and ensures that the Sioux City Community School District programs and curricula are implemented to maximize student-learning experiences. The teacher supervises and evaluates all students within their teaching assignment, working within an established framework for educational services that support student learning. Collaborating with a team of educational professionals, the teacher demonstrates a strong commitment to planning for the improvement of student achievement and organizes instruction to help students learn subject matter and skills that contribute to their educational and social development.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain long-range and daily instructional plans.
• Prepare course objectives and outlines following curriculum guidelines or requirements of the district and state.
• Use a variety of teaching strategies such as group work, lecture, mini-lessons, exploration, questioning, discussion, demonstrations, audiovisual aids, and other cooperative teaching techniques.
• Focus learning on the next concept beyond that which the student already knows.
• Use formative assessment strategies and continually evaluate students' academic and social growth, using differentiated instruction to allow students to apply current knowledge.
• Maintain records for student attendance, evaluations, report cards, discipline records, and documents required by the School Board or Department of Education.
• Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested under reasonable terms.
• Communicate with parents through various methods to reinforce interest in student progress.
• Maintain clear, firm, and reasonable work standards and due dates; circulate during classwork to check student performance; use oral, written, and other work products to assess progress; pose higher-level questions.
• Provide feedback on in-class work to encourage student growth; regularly provide prompt feedback on assigned out-of-class work.
• Share in the sponsorship of student activities and participate in faculty committees.
• Cooperate with other staff members in assessing and helping pupils address social, emotional, and academic issues.
• Attend scheduled professional development and use materials and techniques that improve the educational program.
• Maintain professional competence through self-selected professional growth activities.
• Continue intellectual and professional development and pursue further education in a primarily academic discipline.
• Participate in evaluating resources to deliver the desired curriculum.

Requirements

• Valid Iowa teaching certificate.
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in elementary education or an acceptable content area.
• Proper state certification and licensure for the position.
• Demonstrated ability to enhance academic performance and support the implementation of the Sioux City School District’s student achievement goals.
• Trained in SIOP preferred.
• Experience working with Dual Language and Multilingual students and programs.
• Experience working as an ESL/ELD teacher.

• Analytical and Reasoning Skills: Solid background in assessment, ability to interpret complex and varied data, and apply assessment strategies linking data analysis to school improvement, curriculum, and professional development.
• Technology Skills: Competence in research and information gathering through technology, as well as the ability to present and communicate using technology.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Normal office physical demands. May periodically have moderate physical demands and may be required to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Generally, the employee works inside.
