Sub District Operations Manager

About the role

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) seeks to hire an individual who will contribute to the efficient operation and maintenance of Indiana's highways and bridges. This position is located within the Bluffton Unit and offers a competitive salary starting at $67,314.00, with potential for adjustment based on experience.

Responsibilities

• Set priorities and ensure effective utilization of personnel, time, and equipment for tasks.
• Coordinate and respond to INDOT personnel in emergency and snow/ice situations.
• Coordinate with State Police, County, and Municipal officials during emergencies.
• Plan, track, and meet operating budgets.
• Advise on methods, procedures, scheduling, and equipment availability.
• Oversee maintenance of all state and federal highways and bridges.
• Direct, plan, and schedule maintenance activities within the sub-district.
• Oversee staffing needs of the sub-district daily, including developing and analyzing schedules.
• Inspect and review work for compliance with standards and specifications.
• Ensure requisitioning of required equipment and materials.
• Submit an annual work plan identifying road needs and material requirements.
• Determine necessary resource requirements based on the work plan.
• Prepare written requests for future personnel needs.
• Oversee maintenance and security of sub-district buildings and grounds.
• Train new employees on all functions and safety.
• Participate in the review and resolution of employee complaints and grievance processes.
• Conduct annual job evaluations, counseling, and discipline of employees.
• Recommend hiring of all sub-district employees.

Requirements

• A thorough knowledge of highway maintenance/operations principles, practices, methods, and techniques.
• Thorough knowledge and ability to apply highway management principles and procedures.
• Specialized knowledge and application of highway standards and specifications, highway statutes, and departmental and administrative rules and regulations.
• Leadership and direction for all sub-district employees.
• Effective communication and facilitation of project execution.
• Ability to prioritize and make sound management and fiscal recommendations.
• Ability to work independently and motivate subordinates.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2+ years of training or 2+ years of experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role.
• A high school diploma is required, though a degree is not mandatory.
• Related certifications and coursework may be considered for education or experience.
