About the role

At Wabash, our Student Welder position is specifically designed for high school juniors and seniors and college students enrolled in welding or skilled trades programs who are looking to gain real-world, hands-on experience through our Student-to-Work Program. Student Welders play an important role in supporting the manufacturing of carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum products and subassemblies. This position offers the opportunity to learn alongside experienced professionals, develop technical welding skills, and gain exposure to a fast-paced production environment—all while continuing your education.

Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

• Own and help improve our performance in Safety, Quality, and Delivery
• Carbon Steel /Aluminum / Stainless Steel MIG and/or TIG weld at a level that meets quality standards
• Read engineering prints, weld symbols, and follow specifications
• Basic operator preventative maintenance for welding related equipment
• Maneuvering in tight and small spaces
• Work at heights of 15-20 ft.
• Performing additional work assigned by the supervisor or team leader, which may require the employee to assist in different departments
• Wearing approved personal protective equipment such as safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses with side shields, respirators, hearing protection, etc.
• Completing assigned duties in accordance with safety, policies, and practices, including your individual safety, as well as the safety of co-workers, and the safe use of equipment in the workplace

Tools & Equipment

Examples of potential tools and equipment you may work with include:

• Oxy / Acetylene Torch
• Engineering Prints
• Work Instructions
• Handheld Tools
• Tape Measure
• MIG Welder (GMAW -- including Pulse Transfer)
• TIG Welder (GTAW)
• Possible limited Stick Welder (SMAW)
• Plasma Cutter / Gouging
• Grinder / Sander
• Respirator/ ADF or PAPR Hood

Qualifications

To be considered, you must:

• Be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen
• Pass Weld Tests associated with product line, prior to welding in production
• Pass respirator fit test
• Have basic reading, writing, math & verbal skills
• Be capable of following and understanding engineering prints, specifications & instructions

Skills

Experience and education are a plus; however, it's not required. Wabash provides the necessary training for all welding positions. Upon receiving an offer letter from us, you'll undergo orientation and several days of training, preparing you for the production floor.

Physical Demands

As an employee in this position, you are regularly required to stand, walk, climb, sit, bend, kneel, stoop, handle and operate controls for the length of their entire shift. The employee needs full range of motion in their arms and hands in this position. All personnel must be able to successfully communicate with fellow employees as well. In this position some employees also work in small spaces throughout their shift and frequently lift and/or carry objects up to 50 pounds.
