About the opportunity
Stevens Towing Co., Inc., through Charleston County School District, has positions open for Student Welder Apprentices for the Spring 2020 semester for Baptist Hill High School and Johns Island High School students interested in a work-based learning opportunity. This opportunity offers high school credit and hourly compensation. The Spring apprenticeship term runs from January 2020 through May 2020.
Training areas
This training position requires one to partner and work with an experienced welder to gain skills in the following areas:
- Different gases (argon, helium, argon/carbon dioxide, filler and base metals)
- Metal tensile and yield strength
- Welding materials and alloys
- Applying these processes to manufacturing, repairing, modifying, rebuilding and assembling structures
- Pipe preparation and fitting
- Plate welding
Requirements
- Must have good math skills to do well in any welding project, including problem solving and basic geometry
- Required to learn safety rules and become familiar with proper usage of safety equipment
- Required to comply with all Safety and Pollution Prevention Regulations and Procedures at all times under the direction of Stevens Towing Company, Inc.'s safety policies
- Required to participate in random drug screens as a condition of employment
