About the role

Under the guidance of the After-School Program Coordinator, the Childcare Preschool Assistant provides direction for the program and classroom and implements program reading and interactive curriculum/activities for children ages 2–5. The role focuses on delivering a quality experience to children and parents that aligns with YMCA values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Responsibilities

  • Implement curriculum within established guidelines.
  • Design and implement daily lesson/activity plans.
  • Supervise children, classroom, and all activities in a safe environment.
  • Conduct reading and literacy activities with children in small groups.
  • Make ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
  • Maintain positive relationships and effective communication with parents.
  • Maintain program site and equipment.
  • Maintain required program records.
  • Participate in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.

Requirements

  • Good conduct and academic standing with Sheridan College.
  • Currently enrolled as a Sheridan College student.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater.
  • Must qualify for Federal Work Study to be considered for employment.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire.
  • Mission with Character, Listen 1st, and Child Abuse Prevention training within 6 months of hire.
  • Maintain continuing education credits (STARS) required by state licensing.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Experience with diverse populations.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Ability to plan, lead, and participate in activities.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to engage and interact with kids, parents, and staff in a positive way.
  • Maintain a safe and friendly environment.
  • Physical ability to lift, stand, sit, and move with children.

Pay

$14.00 per hour.

Schedule

Flexible hours based on class schedule. Tentatively 3–4 positions available.
