About the role
Under the guidance of the After-School Program Coordinator, the Childcare Preschool Assistant provides direction for the program and classroom and implements program reading and interactive curriculum/activities for children ages 2–5. The role focuses on delivering a quality experience to children and parents that aligns with YMCA values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.
Responsibilities
- Implement curriculum within established guidelines.
- Design and implement daily lesson/activity plans.
- Supervise children, classroom, and all activities in a safe environment.
- Conduct reading and literacy activities with children in small groups.
- Make ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
- Maintain positive relationships and effective communication with parents.
- Maintain program site and equipment.
- Maintain required program records.
- Participate in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.
Requirements
- Good conduct and academic standing with Sheridan College.
- Currently enrolled as a Sheridan College student.
- Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater.
- Must qualify for Federal Work Study to be considered for employment.
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire.
- Mission with Character, Listen 1st, and Child Abuse Prevention training within 6 months of hire.
- Maintain continuing education credits (STARS) required by state licensing.
Qualifications
- Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
- Ability to plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
- Experience with diverse populations.
- Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
- Ability to plan, lead, and participate in activities.
Working Conditions

- Physical ability to lift, stand, sit, and move with children.
Pay
$14.00 per hour.
Schedule
Flexible hours based on class schedule. Tentatively 3–4 positions available.
