Student Intern, Design Engineering
3‑month internship · Silicon Valley, San Jose, CA · Start: May/June 2027 · Hourly: $24–30 USD (based on years of study, non‑negotiable)
About the Role
The Signal Integrity Engineering Intern will gain hands‑on experience supporting the planning, simulation, lab verification, and troubleshooting of digital PCB designs. You will assist in critical design reviews for signal integrity and work closely with global, cross‑functional teams — including manufacturing, industrial design, and project leadership — to research system ideas, support schematic capture, and validate electrical systems from early design phases through manufacturing support.
Responsibilities
- Design Support: Assist in the development of electrical systems, contributing to system architectures, schematics, and Bill of Materials (BOMs).
- Simulation & Analysis: Perform signal integrity (SI) and power integrity (PI) simulations to evaluate design trade‑offs based on performance and manufacturability.
- Lab Verification: Support validation and characterization of systems by assisting with lab testing of high‑speed digital interfaces and correlating simulation data with physical measurement results.
- Compliance Testing: Help execute physical‑layer compliance testing to ensure circuit designs meet industry standards.
- Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Participate in design reviews to incorporate feedback regarding testing, supply chain, and reliability while working with internal stakeholders and vendors.
- Documentation: Develop and maintain technical documentation, including test reports, analysis summaries, and project updates to support engineering decisions.
Qualifications
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; currently in third year of study.
- No formal work experience required.
Skills
- Foundational knowledge of signal integrity, power integrity, and high‑speed digital PCB design principles.
- Familiarity with or strong desire to learn industry‑standard SI/PI simulation software:
- SI Tools: Keysight ADS, ANSYS tool suite (HFSS, SIWave, Designer), Synopsys Hspice, Siemens HyperLynx, Polar Si8000, Cadence/Sigrity System SI.
- PI Tools: Cadence Sigrity Power SI, Power DC, Optimize PI.
- Basic understanding of or coursework involving high‑frequency lab measurement equipment: Keysight, Tektronix, or LeCroy real‑time and sampling oscilloscopes; Vector Network Analyzers (VNA) and Time Domain Reflectometers (TDR).
- Introductory knowledge of high‑speed compliance standards (e.g., PCIe Gen5/Gen6, Ethernet, USB 3.0, SAS/SATA).
- Experience with numerical computing environments such as MATLAB.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work effectively within team structures.
Benefits
- Experience at a large Canadian‑based global technology company (33,000+ employees across 45+ sites).
- Possibility of a student casual contract position after internship completion.
- Possibility of a full‑time position after degree completion.
- Access to Celestica’s development programs and projects.
- Time Off to Volunteer program — two paid days off per year to volunteer.
- Fun intern activities including celebration events, networking, Spirit Week, and charitable initiatives.
- Internal recognition programs and rewards for stellar performance.
- Development opportunities: soft‑skills courses, innovation projects, mentorship.
- Strategic networking to advance your career and deepen relationships across peers and colleagues.
- Collaborative, global team environment enabled by modern technology.
- Sustainability focus: strong ethics, reduced environmental impact, community empowerment.
Pay
Hourly wage range: $24–30 USD/hr. The rate is determined by years of study completed and is non‑negotiable per company policy.
Physical Demands
Duties are performed in a normal office environment. The role requires extended periods of sitting, sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or detailed data, and frequent repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, mouse use, calculator use).
