About the Role

As a SHS Staff Physician, you will provide clinical and educational services in support of the overall operation of the Student Health Center. Working independently and under general supervision, you will administer direct medical care, including diagnosis and treatment, to patients utilizing written protocols as guidelines. This position requires balancing patient care needs with the efficient operation of the Student Health Center.

As the Head Team Physician, you will provide acute and continuity care to student athletes on and off the field, coordinating care with athletic trainers and other members of the sports medicine program. You will also provide direct medical oversight of athletic training staff and develop clinical and educational services in support of intercollegiate athletics, club sports, athletic trainers, and NCAA policy and procedures.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care – Student Health Services

  • Provide direct patient primary care in accordance with Standardized Procedures and UCM SHS Policies and Procedures.
  • Perform professional patient care medical services, including examinations, diagnoses, and treatment.
  • Prescribe and administer medical treatment, order examinations, analyses, x-rays, physical therapy, and prescription drugs.
  • Perform minor surgical procedures and provide pre- and post-operative primary care of surgical cases.
  • Provide patient education to support self-care and health maintenance, advocating preventative medicine and public health measures.
  • Review reports, records, and the general progress of patient clinical care.
  • Maintain patient records and reports according to professional standards, including charting in a succinct, legible, and accurate manner following the S-O-A-P format.
  • Prepare reports and related correspondence regarding patient care and condition while respecting and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Document ongoing and significant problems on the Problem List and complete appropriate forms (e.g., work-related injury forms, encounter forms, ancillary forms, and urgent care forms).

Intercollegiate Athletics – Direct Clinical Care & Medical Oversight

  • Provide comprehensive sports medicine evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and injuries for UC Merced students and intercollegiate athletes.
  • Consult with SHS providers, athletic trainers, coaches, and administrators as appropriate.
  • Work effectively with medical providers and experts overseeing safety and performance for intercollegiate student athletes.
  • Maintain complete medical records on student athletes, including pre-participation clearance, care of illnesses or injuries, results of medical referrals, and follow-up care.
  • As the Head Team Physician, direct medical care and make final treatment decisions for student-athletes, including return-to-participation decisions and activity limitations.
  • Provide physician coverage for sports medicine clinics, training room coverage, practices, events, competitions, and pre-participation physicals.
  • Collaborate with the Head Athletic Trainer to create and maintain a Sports Medicine Policy and Procedures manual.
  • Ensure all emergency action plans are up to date and implemented, including EMS coverage.
  • Ensure all required training and education for athletics personnel is up to date in collaboration with Athletics Compliance Staff.
  • Develop and implement improved screening, prevention, and performance enhancement programs.
  • Understand NCAA and conference regulations, travel, and sideline coverage responsibilities.
  • Provide medical consultation for drug testing procedures in accordance with NCAA, CCAA conference, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.

Organizational Responsibilities and Professional Compliance

  • Demonstrate a positive, constructive attitude that facilitates the goals and mission of UCM SHS.
  • Adhere to principles of quality, client-oriented standards and demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and sensitivity in all interactions.
  • Refer administrative inquiries and patient complaints/concerns to appropriate supervisors.
  • Maintain knowledge of patient rights, responsibilities, confidentiality, and privacy rules.
  • Understand the social and environmental context of health on the college campus.
  • Know SHS departments, services, locations, and operational, administrative, business, and personnel policies.
  • Work collaboratively with SHS staff following a team approach and comply with Medical Staff Bylaws and professional requirements.
  • Maintain current medical license, CPR certification, DEA certification, BLS certification, and appropriate specialty qualifications or board certificates.
  • Organize and prioritize workload to ensure timely patient care and maintain productivity goals.
  • Maintain communications and coordinate functions with staff, keeping a clean and organized work area.
  • Know emergency policies, procedures, and the use and location of emergency equipment.
  • Initiate basic CPR as needed and adhere to hours of work and payroll responsibilities, demonstrating flexibility in work schedules.
  • Handle case management, continuity, and coordination of care in complex cases as assigned.

Leadership, Consultative Oversight, and Professional Growth

  • Communicate medical knowledge formally and informally, collaborating with other disciplines to develop and evaluate patient education materials.
  • Attend and participate constructively in staff meetings and SHS committees as assigned.
  • Participate in developing standards, policies, and procedures for quality medical, nursing, and preventative health care services.
  • Participate in the orientation of new employees and serve in a teaching capacity for healthcare workers, patients, volunteers, and groups.
  • Contribute to the professional development of mid-level practitioner practice and assist in identifying educational needs.
  • Prepare and share professional literature with other clinical providers and staff.
  • Serve as a resource for nursing staff in enhancing basic medical practice.
  • Contribute to and participate in Quality Assurance activities, facilitating problem-solving and improving practice efficiency.
  • Engage in self-evaluation and goal-setting to maintain and improve performance quality.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $148,895.00 - $293,182.00, with placement in the range based on qualifications and years of experience.
