  • Collaborative Support: Build effective, professional working relationships with a diverse team of peers, full-time facilities mechanics, and supervisors.
  • Operational Communication: Learn to use professional communication tools such as two-way radios and standard office phones to accurately relay messages, report facilities issues, or assist with emergency routing.

Technical Literacy and Campus Operations

  • Basic Hand Tool Proficiency: Gain a practical, hands-on understanding of how to safely select and utilize various standard manual tools (e.g., shovels, rakes, manual wrenches, and tamps) required for basic infrastructure maintenance.
  • Facilities Awareness: Develop a foundational knowledge of the daily logistical operations required to maintain institutional grounds, clean building spaces, and prep environments for structural maintenance.

Safety and Risk Management

  • Hazard Recognition: Identify specific occupational hazards associated with manual labor, heavy lifting, and varying outdoor weather conditions, applying proper safety precautions and ergonomics to mitigate injury.

Function of Position

This is an entry-level student position combining basic, routine elements of general labor and facility maintenance. The student worker assists with routine heavy and light manual tasks to support campus upkeep while ensuring zero conflict with academic schedules. The employee reports directly to and works under the direct, close supervision of a foreman, maintenance mechanic, or other designated higher-level staff member. Supervision of others is not a responsibility of this position.
