Student Athlete Mentor I (Multiple Positions)

About the role

The Student Athlete Mentoring Program is part of the Student Athlete Resource Center’s (SARC) Academic Support Program. Student Athlete Mentors provide extra academic support to student-athletes to improve their retention and graduation rates. They meet with each of their assigned students at least once a week to review their academic progress.

Responsibilities

• Meet with assigned student-athletes at least once a week to review their academic progress.
• Discuss and review the student’s academic progress by reviewing their coursework, syllabi, study skills, time management, class attendance, assignments, and tests.
• Provide tutoring as needed.
• Report the student’s academic progress, meeting attendance, and other pertinent information to the full-time SARC staff.

Requirements

• Working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior;
• Research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information;
• The techniques and methods of interviewing.

Qualifications

• Ability to gather and analyze data;
• Reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations;
• Participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences and interviews;
• Clearly express ideas and recommendations orally;
• Write clear and concise reports;
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and faculty.

Skills

• Effective communication skills in-person, on the phone and via online systems;
• Ability to maintain composure and professionalism while providing direct service to students, even in difficult situations;
• Demonstrated thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
• Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community.

Pay

Salary grade/range: 1
CSU Classification Salary Range: $23.94 hourly - $29.28 hourly
FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)

Schedule

This is a part-time hourly position, at 5 to 20 hours per week depending on case load. Working hours are anticipated primarily between 8am - 4pm, Monday - Friday, during the academic semesters.
