About the role
The Youth Employment Opportunity Program (YEOP) is seeking Student Assistants between the ages of 15 and 25 who are currently enrolled in high school or an accredited college. This role is ideal for self-driven, creative individuals passionate about helping at-risk youth achieve their educational and occupational goals.
Student Assistants will work under the supervision of a Workforce Services Employment Program Manager and the guidance of a YEOP Mentor, providing services to youth aged 15–25 at America's Job Centers of California (AJCC). The position offers on-the-job training and flexible scheduling designed to accommodate educational commitments.
This is a non-testing classification, and individuals who are or have been a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, or a formerly incarcerated youth may receive hiring priority under Government Code section 18220.
Responsibilities
- Case manage at-risk youth through peer advising.
- Refer clients to educational institutions and local training providers.
- Provide vocational guidance and present job search workshops.
- Conduct outreach and recruit youth from local communities and schools.
- Represent EDD and YEOP at local high school and college events, career days, and job fairs.
- Document activities and maintain records at a level necessary for the role.
Requirements
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 25 and currently enrolled in high school, college, or other post-secondary education.
- Minimum of 6 semester units or 8 quarter units (for college students).
- Must meet YEOP eligibility criteria.
- Ability to read and write at a level necessary to document activities.
- Must provide copies of transcripts prior to employment and after each semester.
- May work up to 1,500 hours in a 12 consecutive month period.
Pay
- Range A: $3,167.00 – $4,268.00 per month ($17.74 – $19.49 per hour).
- Range B: $18.98 – $20.86 per hour.
- Range C: $20.29 – $22.34 per hour.
- Range D: $21.72 – $23.91 per hour.
- New hires start at the minimum salary of the classification or alternate range.
Effective July 1, 2025, specific bargaining units and excluded state employees are subject to a salary reduction of 2% – 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025).
Schedule
- Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
- Position is in-office at the Madera AJCC, with potential for some telework.
- Flexible scheduling available to accommodate educational commitments.
