Student Academic Advisor 2

Under the direction of an Advising Unit Coordinator and as part of the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences Undergraduate Academic Advising Center (CNAS UAAC), this position provides academic advising to undergraduate students in Life Science majors (Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biology, Plant Biology, Neuroscience, Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology, Entomology, and Microbiology) or Physical Science majors (Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Physics). Advising is grounded in developmental principles, teaching and learning theory, and promotes student development and academic success.

Responsibilities

• Advise potential and enrolled students on academic progress and degree completion.
• Monitor each student’s progress toward degree requirements.
• Inform students, academic advisors, faculty, and staff of undergraduate student-affairs policies and procedures.
• Refer students to appropriate campus support services.
• Analyze academic trends and collaborate with other advisors and departments to address student advising needs.
• Prepare and maintain descriptive materials for academic majors.
• Prepare and submit catalog copy and the quarterly Schedule of Classes.
• Facilitate undergraduate course revisions and program changes.
• Represent CNAS UAAC at outreach and retention activities, including recruitment, orientation, and advising events such as Highlander Orientation, Academic Success Workshops, Discover/Welcome Days, and college fairs.

The distribution of job functions is approximately 80% academic advising, 15% academic advising support, and 5% other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
• Master’s degree in a related field (preferred).
• 2–4 years of related experience.
• Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of students from diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
• Counseling or advising experience at a 4-year institution.
• Experience with a Student Information System (Banner).
• Experience updating web pages.

• Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access) or equivalent software, the internet, email, and web-based applications.
• Ability to interact professionally and tactfully with students, advisors, faculty, staff, and visitors.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining cooperative working relationships in a team environment.
• Knowledge of department, school, or college policies, procedures, and requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of University of California policies and procedures related to the position.
• Additional counseling or advising experience at a 4-year institution.

Pay

The full salary range for this position is $24.71–$41.67 per hour. The expected pay scale is $24.71–$28.01 per hour. Salary offers are based on education, licensure, certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.
