Structural Steel Fitter/Welder

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interpret blueprints to fabricate structural steel
  • Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements
  • Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded
  • Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions
  • Set up components for welding equipment per specifications (e.g., cut material with gas torch to match measurements)
  • Test and inspect welded surfaces and structures to discover flaws
  • Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety
  • Ensure work is done safely and meets quality standards
  • Keep work areas clean and organized

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a welder
  • Experience using a variety of welding equipment and procedures (flux-core, MIG weld)
  • Experience in using electrical or manual tools (grinders, squares, tape measures, hand tools)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings
  • Knowledge of relative safety standards and willingness to use protective clothing (face shield, gloves, etc.)
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to learn safe overhead crane operations
  • Proficient in English
  • Professional Certification (e.g., an AWS welding certificate) will be a plus

Education and/or Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Prior experience using overhead cranes is preferred
  • Prior experience in a similar role is preferred

  • Able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Able to work effectively with others

Work Environment

  • Noise level fluctuations from moderate to high
  • Use of personal protective equipment
  • Machine/equipment use
  • Position involves everyday risks or exposure to elements that require safety precautions
  • Position will require working in adverse weather conditions such as heat, humidity, cold, precipitation, etc.
