Structural Equipment Engineer III

Merrick is seeking an experienced Structural Equipment Engineer to join our Nuclear Services & Technology (NST) Business Unit, supporting the design and retrofit of Department of Energy governmental facility and equipment projects.

About the role

This full-time position is located in our Aiken, SC; Los Alamos, NM; Oak Ridge, TN; or Greenwood Village, CO offices. A hybrid schedule will be considered.

Responsibilities

• Prepare engineering calculations, sketches, and review drawings.
• Develop project proposals, scopes, budgets, specifications, and technical reports.
• Direct design staff in the preparation of drawings and other engineering deliverables.
• Apply engineering and construction knowledge to develop complete structural designs for steel, concrete, or combined systems using appropriate building and material codes.
• Develop design concepts and recommend structural gravity/lateral support and foundation systems.
• Evaluate existing concrete and steel structures, provide deficiency reports, and recommend tests (non-destructive or destructive) for further evaluation.
• Prepare clear, complete, and concise calculations, including software analysis models and connection designs.
• Coordinate work with other disciplines and perform interdisciplinary checks to minimize errors.
• Prepare design criteria and ensure compliance with project and client requirements.
• Produce structural engineering drawings, calculations, and specifications.
• Participate in bid reviews and design reviews (30%, 60%, 90%) for assigned projects.
• Review shop drawings and submittals for specification compliance.
• Participate in preconstruction meetings, perform site visits, and prepare observation/follow-up reports.
• Review structural-related testing and inspection reports.
• Respond to RFIs and provide construction support as required.
• Provide scope definition, budget, and schedule estimates for proposal development.
• Monitor project progress, track deadlines, and advise on resource needs.
• Lead structural staff and serve as a subject matter expert in advanced structural engineering concepts.
• Mentor junior engineers and designers for professional development.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience.
• Registered Professional Engineer (PE) with the ability to obtain licensure in New Mexico, South Carolina, and/or Tennessee within a reasonable timeframe.
• Proficiency in MS Office, MathCAD, AutoCAD, Revit, ACI 318, AISC 360, AISI 100, ASCE-7, and IBC.
• Proficiency in Finite Element Software such as RISA-3D, STAAD Pro, GT STRUDL, SAP 2000, or SAFE.
• U.S. Citizenship required for client projects.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience with design for Department of Energy governmental facility projects following DOE-STD-1020.
• Experience performing work under a robust quality assurance program such as ASME NQA-1.
• Experience with nuclear analysis and design codes, including ASCE 4, ASCE 43, ACI 349, and AISC N690.
• Experience in the seismic analysis and qualification of mechanical equipment and gloveboxes.
