Barr is seeking a structural engineer to join our structural team in a hybrid role. You will support our structural engineering group by providing design and technical expertise for heavy industrial sites such as power plants, manufacturing, refineries, and mining facilities.
Responsibilities
- Perform engineering calculations and modeling for a variety of industrial and energy-related structures.
- Prepare engineering drawings, technical specifications, and design documentation.
- Contribute to project reports and help develop cost estimates for engineering solutions.
- Participate in site visits and inspections to observe construction activities and ensure compliance with design intent.
- Use structural engineering software (AutoCAD, Revit, Advanced Steel, MathCAD, Staad, Risa) to support project tasks and team collaboration.
- Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and project managers.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a structural emphasis (including structural analysis and steel and concrete design).
- 5+ years of relevant experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) certified or ability to obtain within one year.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Excel, Revit, STAAD Pro, Advanced Steel, RISA 3D, or MathCAD.
- Possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs (up to 30% travel and fieldwork possible).
- Ability to work in industrial environments with rough terrain, moving machinery, and varying outdoor conditions.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to conduct fieldwork in varying outdoor conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, uneven terrain).
- Must be able to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Capable of standing, walking, kneeling, or crouching for extended periods.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by site conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- 8+ years of related work experience.
- Master's degree in civil or structural engineering.
- Experience with 3D software such as Revit.
- Strong technical skills in structural analysis and design.
- Experience in the consulting industry.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and with multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated project organization and management skills.
Pay
Anticipated range of $85,000–$120,000 annually, based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance.

Schedule
- Hybrid work arrangement: split time between Barr’s Ann Arbor, Michigan, office and a home office.
