Streets/Sewer/Water Laborer Part-Time

About the role

The City of Birmingham is seeking qualified candidates for the part-time position of Streets/Sewer/Water (SSW) Laborer in the Department of Public Services. This entry-level position performs maintenance and operation of public infrastructure under the supervision of the Streets/Sewer/Water Foreman.

Responsibilities

• Performs outdoor physical labor.
• Operates various types of equipment, including dump trucks, snow plows, and light construction equipment.
• Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties related to work projects:
  • Patching roads
  • Painting fire hydrants
  • Placing barricades
  • Maintaining vehicles
  • Plowing/salting
• Assists other crew personnel as required.
• Additional related responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• Possession of a high school diploma, or its equivalent.
• Minimum age of 18 years old with a valid driver's license.
• Prefer 2-3 years of experience in the operation of light and medium-duty construction equipment.
• Prefer possession of a State of Michigan commercial driver's license, group A or B, with tanker endorsement.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

• Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
• Must be able to work outside in extreme conditions (heat, cold, snow, rain, etc.).
• Must be able to operate heavy machinery.

• Office space including desk, computer, and phone.
• City provided keys.
• City provided tools.
