Streets Maintenance Worker/Heavy Equipment Operator

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy machinery including loaders, tool cat, skid steer, backhoe, asphalt pavers, and graders in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform routine inspections and maintenance on equipment to ensure functionality and safety.
  • Collaborate with team members to complete projects on time and according to specifications.
  • Digging out damaged asphalt, patching potholes and street cuts.
  • Street overlay and crack-seal operations, concrete repairs on curb, gutters and drainage structures, placing and finishing concrete and gravel.
  • Plowing snow, sanding streets, and sweeping streets, gutters and sidewalks.
  • Actively plan for projects and take instructions from supervisors.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures on the job site.

Qualifications And Skills

  • Proven experience as a heavy equipment operator or a similar role, two years of experience is preferred.
  • Valid license to operate City vehicles and heavy machinery is required.
  • Must be able to obtain a CDL B license during employment, usually within six months.
  • Strong understanding of operational and safety protocols.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.

Education and Experience

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in the public sector is preferred, or experience in construction or industrial settings.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily outdoors with exposure to various weather conditions.
  • The role requires physical strength and stamina due to the manual nature of the work.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and overtime as required.
