Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintains, installs, and/or repairs City grounds, right of ways, facilities, sidewalks, and roadways as needed.
- Operates construction equipment, including heavy equipment, hand tools, and heavy machinery or large trucks.
- Loads truck with supplies and materials needed to complete the job and performs preventative maintenance.
- Responds to emergency inclement weather such as ice, snow, and flooding.
Supplemental Functions
Performs other similar duties as required
Job Specifications and Qualifications
- Knowledge:
- Machinery and hand tools of the trade
- Asphalt, concrete, and vegetation management principles
- Traffic control principles
Licensing and Certifications
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License;
- Ability to obtain a North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker Endorsement. Failure to obtain within 6 months of hire date may result in termination.
Preferred Certifications
- Flagger Certification
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
- Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, crouching, hearing, twisting, and talking.
- Heavy Work: Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 25 -50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.
- Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical demands.
Required Skills
- Reading and interpreting data
- Performing basic mathematical calculations
- Operating machinery and hand tools
- Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
Required Experience
- The ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines, with at least one (1) year of relevant experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
