STREET SWEEPER OPERATOR I

About the role

This is a regular, full-time position in the Public Works/Streets department. The work location is MOC and the hiring range is $21.0370 per hour. Days worked are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine street maintenance and construction tasks, including semi-skilled manual work and operation of light to medium automotive equipment.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the public using excellent customer service skills.
• Operate a motor vehicle and street sweepers to clean and maintain streets, parking lots, medians, alleys, and intersections.
• Respond to emergency calls to clean up wrecks, oil, and gravel spills.
• Perform daily preventative maintenance: check oil, fluids, coolant, filters, lights, brooms; grease inserts; wash unit daily.
• Perform mechanical repairs: change brooms, deflector plate and bar, skid shoes and plates; troubleshoot rear and front engines.
• Prepare daily reports on sweeping hours, mileage, water gallons, debris loads, and maintenance performed.
• Operate jack-hammers, vibrating skid plate tampers, chain saws, weed eaters, hand tools, and miscellaneous equipment.
• Operate dump trucks, snow control equipment, rollers, crack sealing machines, loaders, water trucks, and similar equipment for training and tasks.
• Assist in setting up and cleaning job sites, including traffic control devices; remove weeds, trash, and debris.
• Perform custodial tasks as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent work experience in a closely related construction field.
• Valid state Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement and an acceptable driving record for the past three years.
• One year of work experience in a construction-related field involving operation of trucks or related light automotive equipment, or equivalent vocational training.
• Ability to adapt to rotating shifts and be on 24-hour call, able to report to MOC within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
• Must have a telephone at residence.
• Subject to the City of Farmington’s Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program, including pre-employment, post-accident, random, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.
• Pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol test required.
• Extensive background checks required.

Skills

• Experience operating street sweepers, dump trucks, water trucks, crack sealing machines, jack-hammers, rollers, tampers, chain saws, weed eaters, hand tools, brooms, rakes, pitch forks, pruners, and loaders.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stand and talk or hear. Occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 10 pounds and may occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Work Environment

Regularly works in outside weather conditions. Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to wet/humid conditions and vibration. Occasionally works in high, precarious places and is exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. Works with asphalt, crack sealing material, concrete, salt, liquid calcium/magnesium chloride, oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, herbicides, paint, traffic control signs, trash, weeds, tree limbs, dirt, rock, sand, and gravel. Frequent exposure to gasoline, diesel, paint, and asphalt fumes. Operates and works around noisy, vibrating equipment.
