Street Operations Specialist
About the role
The City of Aurora is seeking dedicated and collaborative individuals to join its Public Works Department. The primary focus is on the Streets Operations Specialist position, which involves operating heavy machinery to maintain city streets and perform snow and ice control operations.
Responsibilities
- Operates heavy equipment such as road graders, front-end loaders, paving and milling machines, conveyer loaders, and other related equipment.
- Performs tasks such as large asphalt patching, road grading, hauling material and equipment, asphalt overlay, drain and trench cleaning, excavation and backfill.
- Performs snow and ice control operations.
- Services, maintains, and makes minor mechanical adjustments and minor repairs on assigned equipment.
- Aids in training other employees in equipment operation.
- Assists in investigating citizen work order requests or accidents.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
- Acts as a Lead Worker supporting and working with the Street Supervisors.
Qualifications
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
- Education: High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience: At least three (3) years progressively responsible experience in the operation of medium and heavy equipment related to street construction and maintenance or equivalent.
- Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of City of Aurora Street System/Snow and Ice Control Plan, application of materials per operation to environmental standards, temporary work zone safety & jobsite specific safety, safety practices common to the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, including FMCSA commercial driver’s license pre/post trip inspections, city standards and material specifications of roadway construction, practices and techniques of heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
- Skills: Construction/Trade skills, skilled in the use of hand and power tools, skill in the operation of heavy equipment related to street maintenance and construction, basic equipment proficiency: tandem axel trucks, tractor trailer heavy haul of equipment and materials, mechanical and vacuum street sweepers, front-end loader, snow blower, paver, miller.
- Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, contractors, and citizens, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, understand and follow complex instructions relative to job assignments to include temporary traffic control plans, ability to perform strenuous, physical, outdoor labor for extended periods of time, outside and in all weather conditions, understand oral and written instructions, operate various types of maintenance and construction equipment, organize crew and equipment for emergencies, supportive team player with a positive attitude and ability to adapt to change, strong commitment to safety.
Requirements
- Licenses and Certifications Required: Colorado Class A CDL, tanker endorsement, no tractor trailer restriction, ATSSA Temporary Traffic Control Technician and Colorado Flagger Certification within six (6) months of employment in the position, RTD On-Track Safety Training Certification within six (6) months of employment in the position, equipment testing of backhoe excavating and road grader within six (6) months of employment in the position, completion of city’s supervisory training six (6) months of employment in the position, completion of 3 street operations written testing of snow operations, PPE, and Work Zone Safety within six (6) months of employment in the position.

Pay
The Hiring range for this position is $28.10 - $35.12/hour. Salary is commensurate with experience.
