About the role
The position involves performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance of streets and storm drainage systems. It requires operating a range of specialized light and heavy equipment, tools, and specialized equipment.
Responsibilities
- Operate a variety of specialized light and heavy equipment, tools, and specialized equipment.
- Perform manual labor tasks to maintain streets, storm drains infrastructure, and City facilities.
- Assist in resurfacing, oiling, patching, sweeping, grading and shaping roads along with digging and filling holes.
- Clear and repair roadways, shoulders, and adjoining areas.
- Clear trash, brush, weeds, and debris from roadways, structures, grounds, and facilities.
- Aid in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices.
- Perform traffic control activities as needed.
- Inspect, clean, and perform routine maintenance work on vehicles and equipment.
- Identify and report mechanical problems requiring additional repair.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Valid Texas Class C Driver's License is required; Commercial Driver's License preferred.
- One (1) year of experience involving the use of light to heavy equipment is preferred.
Qualifications
- Knowledge: General knowledge of light to heavy equipment operating principles; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to light to heavy equipment operations; basic working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in the streets and utility maintenance departments.
- Skills: Judgment and decision making - uses logic and reasoning to analyze, understand, and evaluate job orders and identify potential problems before they arise; excellent organizational and time management skills; assessing the safety of a work site is imperative; critical thinking - good critical thinking, problem solving, and mechanical skill is necessary when accessing work orders.
- Abilities: Coordination of work - ability to share a heavy workload to maintain team balance, acquire skills in all equipment and procedures to become a more valuable crew member; help train and orient new workers; communications - ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other departments, and the public.
Tools and Equipment Used
- Motorized vehicles and equipment, including patching truck, back-hoe, dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, street sweeper, street roller, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, oil distributor, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, and various phone types.
Physical Demands
- Sit, stand, crawl, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to handle and feel/operate/manipulate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
- Lift up to 25 pounds, lift/carry up to 100 pounds with assistance.
- Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
- Exposed to extreme heat in summer and cold in winter.
- Frequently works near moving mechanical parts.
- Exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Frequent exposure to loud environments.
