About the role

At Mercury, we're modernizing banking for startups and ambitious companies. This role involves being the dedicated finance partner to R&D and G&A leadership, owning the financial relationships with key teams, and driving financial planning and forecasting.

Responsibilities

  • Own the financial relationship with Engineering, Product, Design, HR, Legal, and Finance teams.
  • Understand priorities deeply to anticipate questions and support strategic resource allocation decisions.
  • Build and maintain bottoms-up models for headcount and operating expenses, including headcount by team, vendor spend, allocated infrastructure costs, and discretionary budgets.
  • Support R&D leaders with build vs. buy tradeoffs, team sizing, and investment prioritization.
  • Help G&A leaders with vendor contract evaluations, functional scaling ratios, and cost efficiency management.
  • Drive annual planning and ongoing forecasting cycles, translating business priorities into financial plans and adjusting course in real-time.
  • Bring structure to ambiguous investment questions, framing complex, qualitative problems with clear financial perspectives.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of experience in investment banking, strategic finance, or consulting, preferably with technology companies.
  • Strong financial modeling skills, capable of building clean, flexible models from scratch and explaining them to non-financial audiences.
  • Genuine curiosity about product and engineering organizations, understanding team structure, infrastructure costs, and people investments.
  • Ability to build trust quickly with non-finance partners, comfortable leading discussions and asking critical questions.
  • Comfortable working independently with data, using SQL, BI tools, or FP&A platforms, and able to pull and analyze data without relying on a data team.
  • Effective communicator, able to distill complex analyses into clear narratives for leadership teams and adapt communication style based on the situation.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in finance, accounting, or a related field.
  • Experience with FP&A tools and processes.
  • Understanding of SaaS and fintech industry dynamics.
  • Knowledge of compensation surveys and market rates.

Benefits

The total rewards package includes base salary, equity (stock options/RSUs), and benefits. Salary and equity ranges are competitive and updated regularly based on industry data. Offers are tailored based on experience, expertise, location, and internal pay equity.
