About the role
The position is responsible for the operation of the prisoner store, warehouse, and quartermaster functions. Duties include storing, selling, and delivering items to prisoners at a correctional facility, as well as delivering ordered supplies to staff members. The role involves operating computers and supervising and training prisoner workers in store, quartermaster, and warehouse operations.
The quartermaster position is located inside the secure perimeter of a secure Level I or multilevel facility. Warehouse and store positions are located outside the secure perimeter but involve daily work with prisoner work crews. Staff make daily deliveries inside the secure perimeter.
Requirements
- Three years of experience in the storage, handling, and distribution of materials, or in the operation of mail handling and sorting machines and related equipment, including two years equivalent to the Storekeeper E6 level.
- Applicants convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.
- Employment requires adherence to high ethical standards, including reporting any potential conflicts of interest.
- Some positions may require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to operate designated state vehicles.
- The Department of Corrections will not hire individuals convicted of a felony or with pending felony charges, per Public Act 140 of 1996.
Training
New hires and returning employees (after more than two years away) must complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET), consisting of 40 or 80 hours of in-person training based on offender contact and job classification, plus additional online training. This is a drug and alcohol test-designated position.
