About the role
The primary responsibility of this role is overseeing and directing staff performing tasks involved in stevedoring activities such as unloading/loading of barges and sea-going vessels. Key responsibilities include ensuring safe, efficient, and profitable operations, leading safety initiatives, managing customer service, and communicating with vessel officers.
Responsibilities
- Participate in and lead pre-shift meetings
- Monitor and coach staff on safety to ensure compliance with the company safety program
- Ensure all operations comply with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations
- Oversee and direct staff in barge and vessel processes
- Lead, coach, and guide staff on customer service and operating costs
- Manage staff performing barge and vessel loading/unloading safety procedures
- Communicate with vessel officers and marine fleets to ensure efficiencies
- Update Terminal Manager on operations status
- Manage inventory for equipment and supplies
- Oversee housekeeping duties
- Avoid delays, production issues, and safety infractions
- Complete and maintain accurate documentation and reports
- Communicate professionally with customers and third parties
- Provide input into staffing and job development activities
- Manage equipment and labor expenses
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent experience and training
- 5 years' experience in stevedoring/marine industry
- Experience with management and customer relations
- Knowledge of facility cost structures, mix and blend analysis, safety, efficiency, preventive maintenance, OSHA, EPA, interest, freight
- Strong knowledge of vessel stevedoring operations; including vessel operations, and barge handling
- Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
- Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational, strategic planning, time management and multi-tasking skills
- Strong leadership skills
- Strong planning skills
- Ability to work independently and/or within a team environment
- Ability to utilize common sense to provide direction to others and assist others when needed
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent
