About the role
As a Sterile Processing Technician, you will provide services in the decontamination and sterile processing areas, ensuring monitoring of sterilizers is performed. This role collaborates with OR staff to provide sterile instruments and equipment needed for operative procedures. You will assist with ongoing inventory of sterile supplies, equipment scheduling, and departmental communication. Additional responsibilities include performing duties independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities
- Ensure operating room readiness by preparing sterile surgical instrumentation and disposable supplies for procedures.
- Handle the proper care, cleaning, decontamination, disassembly, reassembly, quality assurance, identification, set assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instrumentation for PeriOp Services, hospital departments, and clinics.
- Provide decontamination and sterile processing support to PeriOp Services, ED, ICU, hospital-wide departments, clinics (on and off campus), and ambulatory surgery centers.
- Manage sterile surgical instrumentation and disposable patient care supplies, including decontamination, assembly, sterilization, storage, case cart support, OR core tech support, and high-level disinfection.
- Follow established protocols and instructions for use (IFU) for decontamination, assembly, packaging, quality assurance, repairs, and sterility handling of specialized surgical instruments.
- Maintain sterilization logs and quality assurance records for all decontamination, high-level disinfection (HLD), and sterilization equipment.
- Interpret the surgical schedule and medical terminology to prepare required sterile surgical instrumentation and disposable supplies.
- Address and communicate special needs to minimize surgery delays and respond to emergent calls from the Operating Room.
- Prioritize instrumentation requests and direct services to ensure OR priorities are completed in a timely manner.
- Differentiate between surgery-owned, consignment/loaner, hospital department, surgeon, ambulatory surgery center, and clinic instrumentation (both on and off campus).
- Track surgical instruments using paper logs or computer processes for items leaving the area.
- Report needed replacements of surgical instruments to maintain inventory and set readiness.
- Operate specialized equipment for decontamination, high-level disinfection, and sterilization, including steam and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, automated washers, ultrasonics, flush pumps, visualization devices, and cart washers.
- Use quality assurance testing equipment for flexible endoscopic scopes, transesophageal ultrasound probes, and electro-surgical insulation defect detectors.
- Utilize heat detection devices to ensure safe use of steam-sterilized instruments and demagnetizers for ophthalmic and delicate cardiac instruments.
- Inspect inner channels of lumened surgical instrumentation and flexible scopes using borescope devices.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment by adhering to Standard Precautions and Infection Control practices, including proper donning of PPE during decontamination.
- Maintain flexibility to rotate shifts, adjust hours as needed, and uphold professional appearance and attendance standards.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
- Mechanical aptitude with the ability to break down, clean, lubricate, reassemble, and problem-solve incomplete trays or missing instrumentation.
- Effective organizational, communication, and human relation skills.
Qualifications
- CRCST certification or working SPD experience (preferred).
- Complete national certification as an SPD Technician within one year of hire (preferred).
- Additional related education and/or experience (preferred).
Schedule
Full-time, 36 hours per week (3x12s). Shift: 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM. Schedule: Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
Pay
Flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential and an 18% night shift differential when applicable.
