Sterile Processing Technician

Job Summary

Responsible for performing delegated activities to support the operating room team in the care of the surgical patient.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare and deliver medical/surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment for surgical procedures under supervision.
  • Clean, package, and process surgical equipment and instrumentation, maintaining inventory and storage of supplies.
  • Manage multiple computer applications to assist with sterilization tracking and processes.
  • Operate and troubleshoot power equipment to process instruments, such as autoclaves and ultrasonic cleaners.

Skills Required

  • Adaptability to unpredictable situations within the perioperative setting.
  • Patient-centered and customer-focused communication skills.
  • Frequent lifting/carrying of 25 pounds or more, with occasional work above shoulder level.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Two years of experience in handling and sterilization processing of surgical/medical/dental instrumentation within the past four years, or a vocational certificate as Central Service Technician or Patient Care Assistant within the last two years.
  • Two years of experience as a Central Service Technician or Patient Care Assistant in an acute care setting within the last five years.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.

Education Required

  • A high school diploma or GED.

Certifications & Licensure Required

  • Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) Certification as a Central Processing Technician (CRCST) within 18 months of hire.
  • Must be 18 years of age prior to start date.
  • CBSPD or CRCST certification.
  • BLS certification.

Preferred Vocational Certificate

  • A vocational certificate as Central Service Technician or Patient Care Assistant within the last two years.
  • Two years of experience in handling and sterilization processing of surgical/medical/dental instrumentation within the past four years.
  • At least two years of experience as a Central Service Technician or Patient Care Assistant in an acute care setting within the last five years.
