About the role
The Sterile Processing Coordinator coordinates and assigns processing services efficiently, ensuring timely decontamination and reprocessing of instruments and supplies. They serve as a role model and mentor, facilitating teamwork with the OR staff and maintaining consistent workflow.
Responsibilities
- Serves as the primary resource for staff in all areas of service performed by the department.
- Communicates actively and positively with interprofessional health care team members, coaches staff in effective communication, and collaborates with management for improvement of employee engagement scores.
- Coordinates daily interface between sterile processing, surgery, and materials management, preparing items in advance for OR needs.
- Monitors staffing levels, regulates scheduling, and provides daily reporting to management.
- Serves as the primary quality assurance resource, reviews and revises policies and procedures, and ensures the effectiveness of the sterilization process.
- Maintains accurate tracking of instrumentation and monitors all sterilizer parameters.
- Collaborates with Materials Management to identify and order non-sterile items in need of processing.
- Identifies opportunities for practice changes and supports change initiatives, providing coaching and oversight for new employee preceptorships.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent education.
- Six years of Sterile Processing experience in an acute care hospital.
- Required Sterile Processing certification: CSCST or CSPDT.
- Required Instrument Specialist certification: CIS or CSIS.

- Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job.
- Speaks, reads, and writes English proficiently.
- Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers.
- Advanced knowledge of infection control, decontamination, and sterilization techniques.
- Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting departmental equipment.
- Uses basic computer programs such as Microsoft Office.
- Utilizes all departmental equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions and departmental policies.
- Completes departmental and institutional competencies within required timelines.
- Maintains patient and family privacy.
Qualifications
