About the Role

The Assistant Manager provides guidance, direction, and leadership to Sterile Processing 48X staff to deliver quality service in patient care equipment and surgical instrumentation reprocessing functions, including collection, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, high-level disinfection, and distribution. This role ensures quality, productivity, and labor efficiency while assisting the department manager in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives. The Assistant Manager serves as a subject matter expert for product reprocessing, ensures compliance with the departmental budget, and models excellence in customer service for both internal and external stakeholders.

Department Overview

Sterile Processing 48X is a department within Perioperative Services that supports operating rooms by cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing surgical instrumentation, flexible scopes, and case cart assembly. The unit also supports Patient Care Services, Ambulatory Services, and the Primary Care Network by reprocessing reusable equipment and surgical instrumentation. Additionally, Sterile Processing 48X cleans and restocks emergency crash carts, PAPR supply carts, airway boxes, and ICU transport bags. The department manages fiscal, material, and human resources to support surgical and patient care coordination across the hospital and clinics.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and provide clinical leadership to Sterile Processing staff (40%).
• Serve as a liaison for ambulatory clinics and non-operative sites (40%).
• Ensure practice and compliance with regulatory preparedness (15%).
• Perform other duties as assigned (5%).

Requirements

• Base Certification of either CRCST from Healthcare Sterile Processing (HSPA) or CSPDT from The Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD). Certification must be maintained through CEUs and renewals as a condition of employment.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
• At least five years of demonstrated experience as a sterile processing technician in a Sterile Processing Department.
• Minimum two years of experience as a Sterile Processing Manager/Supervisor.
• Demonstrated experience practicing and implementing operational practices according to AAMI Standards and Guidelines.
• Extensive understanding and ability to maintain current knowledge of regulatory requirements and professional agencies, including CMS, TJC, AORN, and APIC, to ensure compliance.
• Experience with disinfection, sterilization, packaging, and infection control practices and principles.
• Demonstrated experience overseeing or adhering to departmental staffing, revenue, or expense budgets.
• Extensive knowledge of AAMI (American Association of Medical Instrumentation) recommended practices and regulatory agency guidelines.
• Experience and knowledge of a surgical environment.
• Proficiency in Central Processing programs and computers, including instrument tracking software, email, spreadsheets, and word processing.
• High attention to detail, quality, and thoroughness in completing work accurately and timely.

Pay

Hourly salary range: $42.19 - $77.63.

Schedule

• Full-time (100%) position.
• Shift: Monday through Friday, 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM.
• May require overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call commitments to meet departmental staffing needs.
• Position is 100% on-site.
