About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Quality Control Manager to lead the quality function at a steel fabrication facility. This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for ensuring that welding, fabrication, coatings, dimensions, and finished products meet engineering specifications, customer requirements, industry standards, and regulatory expectations.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the overall Quality Control department, including QC Inspectors.
- Provide training, technical guidance, performance feedback, and leadership to the QC team.
- Administer and maintain AISC certification requirements and quality programs.
- Manage welder qualification programs, including PQRs, WPSs, and welder certifications.
- Oversee internal and third-party NDT activities, including Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Magnetic Particle Testing (MT).
- Perform and oversee inspections of welds, structural steel, dimensions, coatings, and fabricated components.
- Review blueprints, engineering specifications, shop drawings, and project quality requirements.
- Coordinate inspections with customer engineers, owner representatives, regulatory agencies, and state inspectors.
- Resolve technical quality concerns and maintain professional relationships with customers and external stakeholders.
- Maintain the Quality Control Manual, inspection procedures, quality records, and project documentation.
- Ensure hold-point logs, inspection reports, and other required documentation are completed accurately and on schedule.
- Identify quality issues and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Work closely with production and engineering teams to maintain quality while meeting production schedules.
- Participate as a member of the Plant Leadership Team and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Apply Lean Manufacturing principles to reduce defects, rework, waste, and production inefficiencies.
Qualifications
- Current Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification is required.
- NDT certifications in Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and/or Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) are preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience leading quality control functions involving welding in a heavy manufacturing or steel fabrication environment.
- Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication, welding, blueprints, shop drawings, and engineering specifications.
- Strong understanding of welding inspection, WPS/PQR requirements, welder qualifications, and NDT methods.
- Experience with AISC Certification and Quality Management Requirements.
- Proficiency with computers and quality documentation systems.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Excellent leadership, communication, negotiation, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to make sound technical decisions.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, heavy industrial manufacturing environment.
