About the Role

Facilities Maintenance Operations (FMO) offers building and landscape maintenance, and custodial services to Harvard faculties and departments on a fee-for-service basis. As an in-house alternative to contractor services, FMO operates under the same principles that guide any successful maintenance service business.

This role involves installing, modifying, and repairing all types of boilers, heating systems, cooling systems, and auxiliary equipment. You will fabricate, install, modify, and repair high and low-pressure piping systems, interpret mechanical plans and prints, and update them as necessary. The position requires assisting and advising customers on work progress and providing responsive customer support. All work must comply with the Massachusetts State Building Code and established compliance requirements.

You may work independently or as part of a multi-trade team under the guidance of the Area Supervisor and/or Working Foreperson. The role is designated as Critical Operations Personnel, requiring on-site support during emergency situations as determined by management.

Responsibilities

• Install, modify, and repair boilers, heating systems, cooling systems, and auxiliary equipment.
• Fabricate, install, modify, and repair high and low-pressure piping systems.
• Interpret and update mechanical plans and prints.
• Assist and advise customers on work progress and provide responsive customer support.
• Perform installation, maintenance, inspection, and testing in accordance with Massachusetts State Building Code and compliance requirements.
• Perform other core trade skills and related duties as required.
• Work independently or as part of a multi-trade team.
• Wear/use appropriate safety clothing/equipment and maintain a professional image at all times.

Working Conditions

• Critical Operations Personnel: Required to provide on-site support during emergency situations.
• Must be able to stoop, bend, and work in awkward positions for extended periods.
• Routinely walk to and from various buildings carrying tools and equipment.
• Lift a minimum of 50 lbs and assist in pushing, pulling, and transporting piping and equipment in excess of 200 lbs.
• Work alone, in confined spaces, and in extreme temperatures.
• Climb multiple sets of stairs and work off ladders, staging, lifts, or other elevated platforms.

Requirements

• Minimum five years of experience installing and maintaining commercial or institutional-scale heating and cooling systems.
• Skilled in all aspects of steamfitting/pipefitting work, with experience in maintaining district heating and cooling systems.
• Massachusetts State License: Journeyman or Master Pipefitter’s license (preferred) for a minimum of five years.
• Five years’ experience maintaining Steam or Hot Water Systems.
• Valid State driver’s license with a driving history satisfactory to meet Campus Services standards.
• Pass a Respiratory Physical and obtain certification for respirator use.
• Comply with all standard safety codes and practices.
• Proficiency in using industry-recognized diagnostic testing and troubleshooting equipment.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations for sizing and installing system components.
• Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and operating manuals.
• Effective communication and interaction with peers and customers.
• Willingness to work in research laboratory environments and around hazardous materials.
• Willingness to accept a reasonable amount of overtime.
• Receive specialized training in the inspection and testing of steam traps or other devices.
• Basic keyboard proficiency and understanding of Windows®-based software.
• Supply a complete set of hand tools.

• Monday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
• Tuesday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
• Wednesday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
• Thursday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
• Friday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
• Saturday: Off

$50.82/hour
