Stationary Engineer/Boiler Operator (CHP)

Position Information

The successful candidate will become part of a skilled trade's team responsible for the Central Heating Plant (CHP) and campus-wide maintenance activities. This individual will be called upon to perform a variety of tasks associated with maintaining and operating CHP, High Temperature Hot Water (HTHW) distribution system, building HVAC, and various mechanical / plumbing / electrical/ control systems.

These are current benefit levels subject to future changes. This position is an Oakland University Campus Maintenance and Trades – MEA/NEA position. The incumbent will be represented by the MEA/NEA. Minimum Qualifications

• High school graduation, endorsed trade school or an equivalent combination of education.
• Proof of four years of experience operating heating plants, power houses or boiler rooms with high pressure steam and/or High Temperature Hot Water (HTHW) operations.
• A valid current City of Detroit high pressure boiler operator’s license.
• Operation and maintenance working knowledge of operation and maintenance of hydronic heat systems, fans, motors, isolation valves, control valves, pumps, expansion tanks, heat exchangers, cooling towers and water chemical treatment.
• Knowledge, experience and training for flame monitor safety controls.
• Evaluation and taking corrective steps to resolve equipment malfunctions.
• Understanding, troubleshooting and resetting boiler management system components.
• Working knowledge of other trades including electrical and plumbing installations and ability to perform repairs on these systems.
• Competence to repair equipment in a professional manner.
• Ability to read, understand, interpret, and follow blueprints, sketches, job specifications, layout piping, directions, safety labels, equipment manuals, etc.
• Aptitude and skills necessary to operate a personal computer.
• Physical ability to perform the full range of proposed job duties and capability to tolerate high levels of heat and noise.
• Ability to work without supervision.
• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor, students, staff, faculty and visitors.
• A valid driver’s license and driving record acceptable to the University by the University’s insurance carrier.

Desired Qualifications

• Minimum of (2) years’ experience operating a Building Automation System (BAS) using Honeywell EBI, Automated Logic Corp (ALC) WebCTRL, Johnson Controls, Tridium/Niagara, comparable BAS application product.
• Knowledge and experience using ABB Industrial Compact AC800M PLC’s, Bailey SLC’s, Allen Bradley Logix or other industrial automation controls.
• Knowledge, experience and formal training for Fireye E-110 or newer flame monitor safety controls.
• Experience with Cogeneration.

Unless otherwise required by an applicable collective bargaining agreement, all minimum, additional and desired qualifications are preferred, but qualifications, degrees, and/or experience deemed comparable and/or equivalent by Oakland University in its sole and exclusive discretion may be considered.
