Stationary Engineer

Responsibilities

Under supervision, operates, maintains, and adjusts steam power plant and electromechanical building equipment.

• Operates, maintains, and adjusts boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, and equipment for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, lighting, and associated systems in public buildings, municipal pumping stations, and incinerators.
• Performs periodic inspections and minor repairs of equipment.
• Conducts preventive maintenance.
• Takes responsible charge of a watch and directs subordinate personnel during shifts.
• Operates control consoles in control rooms.
• Prepares requisitions for materials and spare parts.
• Instructs and trains subordinates and other personnel.
• Reads and logs meters, gauges, and other recording devices.
• Maintains records and prepares reports.
• Inspects low-pressure boilers in accordance with the unified inspection procedure instituted by the New York City Department of Buildings.

Requirements

• A valid High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer license issued by the New York City Department of Buildings (must be maintained for the duration of employment).
• For certain positions, candidates must obtain (within ninety days of appointment) one or more of the following certifications:
  • Certificate of Fitness for Standpipe, Automatic Sprinkler, and/or Air Compressor (New York City Fire Department).
  • Certificate of Equivalent Instruction and/or Restricted Asbestos Investigator Certificate (New York City Department of Environmental Protection).
  • Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating Machine Operator (Unlimited Capacity) (New York City Fire Department).
  • Certificate for Hazardous Materials.
  • CFC Certificate (EPA for Handling Refrigerants).
  All required certificates must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
