Station Design Manager
About the role
The Rail Stations Design Manager will provide design leadership for rail and transit stations and passenger facilities projects, from early planning and concept development through final design and delivery. This senior role will play a key part in leading multidisciplinary teams delivering complex station and passenger facility projects for major transit agencies.
Responsibilities
- Provide design leadership for rail and transit stations and passenger facilities projects, from early planning and concept development through final design and delivery.
- Act as a client-facing design leader for major transit agencies, developing and maintaining trusted relationships and supporting long-term client strategies.
- Lead and contribute to business development activities, including shaping pursuit strategies, supporting proposals, and representing Arup in key client discussions.
- Oversee and guide multidisciplinary design teams (architecture, structural, MEP, civil, rail systems, operations) to deliver high-quality, integrated station solutions.
- Support technical excellence by setting standards for design quality, constructability, safety, accessibility, sustainability, and passenger experience.
- Mentor and develop staff, helping grow the next generation of station and facilities designers within Arup.
- Collaborate with regional and national rail leaders to align station design initiatives with Arup’s broader rail and transit strategy.
Requirements
- 12 years’ experience in designing rail or transit station and passenger-facility projects, including design leadership roles on large, complex, multidisciplinary programs.
- A strong understanding of station planning, design, and delivery, including interfaces with rail operations and rail systems.
- Proven ability to lead teams, manage complexity, and influence outcomes across disciplines and stakeholders.
- Self-starter; able to take on work rather than be given work.
- A background in architecture, engineering, or a related discipline, with professional credentials (licensure preferred).
- Experience working with New York metropolitan rail/transit agencies (e.g., MTA C&D, Metro-North Railroad, Long Island Rail Road, NYC Transit, New Jersey Transit, Amtrak) is highly desirable.
Qualifications
- Experience with AutoCAD and/or Bentley software.

The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in New York is $170,000 to $200,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary.
